Safety

Have your family make a safety plan for your home, work, schools and when outdoors.  Practice the plan and review it.  Pick a place where your family members could go if a tornado is coming into your county or is already in your county.  This place could be your basement, or if you don't have basement, a hallway in the center of your house. A closet, or a bathroom are good too, but make sure it is in lowest level of your house.  Stay away from windows or glass.  If you are in a high building you may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor so go to a place in the center of the building like a hallway.

You should probably have things like a flashlight, radio with batteries, canned food with a can opener, and a first aid kit with your family's medication.

Listen to your television warnings.  If there is a watch out for your area it means that a tornado could form in your area, but if there is a tornado warning in your area it means that a tornado has been spotted in your area and you should take cover immediately.  You can also listen to your radio for these types of warnings. If you are ouside during a tornado and you do not have enough time to get to a building, go to a ditch or an area where there is  a low lying place.  Remember, the tornado is very strong and moves quickly so you should never try to outrun a tornado in your car.  If possible get under a bridge or overpass.  But if a bridge or overpass is nowhere near get out of your car and go directly to a ditch and protect your head and neck area with your hands or whatever is possible.  Mobile homes are  very unsafe  places to be during a tornado. Leave the home and go to a nearby building that is strong.

After the tornado has passed and you are sure everything is okay go out and look around your house for damage.  Remember to stay away from down power lines and damaged areas.
